I know the movie Wild has been out for a bit now, but right around the time that it was released in theaters, my friend gave me the book as a gift. It's probably not something that I would have picked out myself, but that's how you discover new books and genres, right?
The beginning of the book was harder for me to get into. I like the outdoors, but I'm not an avid outdoors person. As in, hiking for 3 months sounds slightly closer to torture than an adventure to me. So her desire to do this was hard for me to relate to.
Once the story got going though, I found it fascinating all of the stuff she was able to accomplish, and all of the people that she met along the trail. It was interesting to go back and forth between the past and the present to see what brought her to the point she's at today.
Overall, I'd give the book 4 out of 5 stars.
I waited to see the movie until after I'd read the book, and I tried to wait a few weeks after I was done reading to watch the movie. Sometimes I get more focused on the differences between the book and the movie that I don't focus on the movie itself.
I thought the movie was really well done. There were some changes from the book to the movie (her step father was left totally out of the movie all together, and some of the people she met had longer, more in-depth roles in her journey than the book showed), but overall I thought they did an incredible job recreating this story.
I'd recommend reading and watching both if you haven't already!
I completely forgot about this movie (and book)! I definitely want to see it so I'll wait to read the book first. Glad to hear you liked it though!

I'm glad you liked the book & movie--I still need to watch it!! And I'm glad to hear that it's pretty good. Of course they're going to change the movie a little, though...I'd be surprised if I ever found a movie that followed a book exactly, lol.
ReplyDeleteI didn't read the book but saw the movie on a plane back from Puerto Rico - I guess I just couldn't relate to her character at all so I didn't really think it was as amazing as everyone thought, but I did really love her ability to push herself to that limit and of course the fact that it was a true story made it even better! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to you enjoyed everything! I only made it through a chapter of the book before feeling like it was torture to go any further, and I wasn't a fan of the movie at all ... I just couldn't get myself to relate to her, and I kind of thought she was a despicable person (even though I know she redeems herself). That's why it's always fun to read people's different thoughts!
ReplyDeleteI have read it or seen the movie. Thanks for the review! I always love when a good book becomes a movie!
ReplyDeleteI haven't even heard of the book/movie- AH! I am sooooo out of the loop, ha!
ReplyDeleteYou are reminding me I need to see the movie!! I read the book earlier this year, but I always love critiquing a book to movie adaptation!
ReplyDeleteThis was my first Audiobook and I really enjoyed it as well. I thought Reece Witherspoon did an amazing job in the movie too. I'm not a huge camping fan unless it's in a cabin or something with running water and electricity so while I was listening/watching I was thinking, "Yeah no. Just no!" lol
ReplyDeleteI don't know if this is something I would normally pick up and read and/or watch. I may add it to my list now for future consideration. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI am so behind - I haven't seen the movie yet or read the book! And I almost picked it up at the airport last week when we got canceled - like had it in my hand and put it back - I might now get it next time!
ReplyDeleteHiking for 3 months sounds like torture to me too! I'm more of a "glamping" kinda girl ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed the book, I can't wait to see the movie as I love Reese! So happy that you feel the movie was well done too!
This is on my redbox list! (ps magic mike was finally seen yesterday haha) :) :)
ReplyDeleteI never read the book, but did watch the movie. (Which I almost never do in that order!) I actually hated the movie, but thought it would have made sense as a book. There were just so many flashbacks and it seemed like the plot was lacking a little- nothing connected the way that I wanted it to. I think I might still read the book, though and fill in the gaps for myself.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read or seen either, but I'm glad to hear your opinions! I hadn't decided whether to read it, but now I think I should ;)
