I mentioned the other day that I just got done reading the book Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford for my book club and I really enjoyed it!
It is a very sweet story about a relationship between a Chinese boy and a Japanese girl in America during World War II. It goes back and forth between present day and the time during the war to tell this bitter, and sweet story of their relationship. It takes place during a time in the United States where Asians were not looked at favorably, and when "camps" were set up to contain people with Japanese backgrounds. The book tells of their relationship while also giving you vivid pictures and feelings about what was going on in the US during this time. My description of the book might not be doing the book justice, but I promise you that it's lovely.
I wasn't sure about this book at first because I didn't really "get" the description when I read the synopsis on Amazon. I had heard from another blogger (Shari, you've again given me a fab recommendation!) that it was a good story though, and when searching for a good book for book club, it popped up again. I recommended it to the group and I'm really glad that I did.
I would highly recommend this book. I'm not a HUGE history buff, but I do enjoy learning more about history through stories like these. Go check it out, download it, buy it...you won't regret it.
Pinky promise! :)

ReplyDeletedon't know if this is something i'd read but i'm glad you enjoyed it!
Sounds like a wonderful story... I think you did a great job at reviewing it! I'd read it... EXCEPT, I got THREE other books on my to-read list (which will take awhile between my wifey and momma-of-two duties and blogging, HA.)
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to read this for a long time! Sounds like it would be a great book club pick!

I started this book a few weeks ago, but it didn't suck me in like I'd hoped. I do want to finish it though, so this review has renewed my interest!

I've heard great things about this one, although never really knew what it about. But it does sound like something I'd enjoy, and reading your review actually makes me want to go out and track down a copy.
ReplyDeleteI read it a couple of years ago and it is such a sweet love story. One that you end up pondering and thinking about years later. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
