I just finished the book Paper Towns by John Green on Monday and wanted to review it before I forgot everything I wanted to say.

You may have been seeing previews for this movie, which looked like it could be interesting when I saw them, and prompted me to read the book before the movie came out. It's also by the same author of The Fault in Our Stars which I liked, and it had 4 stars on Goodreads, so I was excited to try it out!
Boy was I disappointed. I'll explain, but first, the Goodreads synopsis:
"Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she cracks open a window and climbs into his life—dressed like a ninja and summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows. After their all-nighter ends, and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to discover that Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery. But Q soon learns that there are clues—and they're for him. Urged down a disconnected path, the closer he gets, the less Q sees the girl he thought he knew... "
I can't tell you how annoyed I was reading this book. The characters in the book are really unbelievable, and the entire story-line is peppered with metaphors and analogies that are so over the top that it's frustrating. The book tries to be poetic, but it's just ridiculous.
There were two parts of the book that I enjoyed reading--the night time escapades with Margo, and a road trip that happens towards the end of the book. Those two things comprised about 10% of the book. So, I basically hated 90% of the book.
And the ending? It's awful. It's stupid. Margo is stupid, the main character is stupid...I was so happy to be done with the book. And then I was mad that I ever bought it in the first place. If I could return a Kindle book, I would return this one and get my money back.
I will not be watching the movie after reading this awful book, so at least I saved myself $10+ on a ticket.

If you liked this book, I hope my review doesn't offend you. I just didn't get it and was annoyed by the lack of realism to most of the story.
Can you tell how I really felt about the book?? :)
Check out some of the other books I've been reading lately on my Book Reviews page.

thanks for the review! I thought the preview was weird but I thought maybe it was just me because I know how everyone is obsessed with the author, glad to know I'm not alone!

I need the little crying/laughing emoji here! Totally felt the same way, and yet I HAD to finish it to see how it ended- ick! The ending made it worse!!
ReplyDeleteYour book reviews are some of my favorite posts because of your blunt honesty! I've been eyeing this at Target for a few weeks, so I definitely will be skipping over it now! Plus, the movie never really intrigued me because Cara Delevigne drives me insane. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review - I was considering this one. I felt like I might be too old to read it, but I did bawl like a baby reading and watching Fault in Our Stars.
ReplyDeleteI love your book reviews so I learn not only what to read but also what NOT to read!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about this one. Thanks for the honest review!

I've been seeing the previews for the movie, and it looks good! Sounds like I may not want to read the book, and just see the movie :)
ReplyDeleteI actually really wanted to watch the movies based on the previews so I am surprised by this review! Thank you for posting! You saved me from a waste of time. BTW you can return a kindle book for a refund! I did it once before with one book that I HATED and felt was falsely advertised.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you said this! I have been looking at this one but I'll skip it now!
ReplyDeleteOk I'm so glad you wrote a review on this book because I think the preview to the movie looks so dumb and I had absolutely no desire to see it at all. And now I know to steer clear of the book too. I think I downloaded a sample of it on my Kindle app or Nook but never got around to actually reading it. So thanks for saving me a $10 movie ticket and a $7 book.
ReplyDeleteAlso I think if you email Kindle you actually can return books you didn't like. There may be a time limit on it but I could have sworn a friend told me the accepted returns if you didn't like a book. Worth looking into anyway! :)
annnnnnnnd that's why I love you. No fluff and no BS. Even from that preview what the hell? Dressed in ninja clothes? Thank you for the heads up for that avoid!
ReplyDeleteI have not read the book, but I almost laughed out loud at the summary. His long-time crush just climbs into his window?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the book review. It was on my Wish List on Amazon but have now deleted it. Two many good books to read. I don't have time to read any that are not.
ReplyDeleteugh glad you posted this bc the movie did capture my interest for a sec or two.... (well the previews!)
