Windy Weekending

Happy Monday, friends! I'm going into this week excited that it's a short week and at the end of it is lots of food and family!

This weekend was filled with the best kind of relaxation and low key-ness :)

My weekend highlights included:

~starting my Friday off with a decaf peppermint mocha #fridaytreat
~a little date night with MG to one of our favorite Mexican spots where we stuffed ourselves on chips and salsa and burritos.

~Watched one of the most ridiculous Dateline episodes (did anyone else see it? insane!) and actually stayed up almost to the end (which is quite the feat for me lately, making it anytime past 9:30 without passing out, let alone close to 11)

~Started Saturday morning early, and wearing my first maternity shirt (the bump is more obvious from the side--bump-date coming soon!)
~After breakfast, MG and I went to Buy Buy Baby again to check out the strollers we've had our eyes on, but got side tracked in the glider section since we saw a floor model of the one we'd wanted. It was a custom order that was cancelled and had just been put out the day before. We ended up getting it for $300 off the regular price!
for my preggo friends: stalk the Buy Buy Baby by you (if there is one) for the floor models--you can get a phenomenal deal, AND you can use the 20% off coupon from Bed Bath and Beyond!
~Luckily our friend was willing to come by with his truck (and happened to be in the area when MG texted him), so he helped us bring it home and get it upstairs.
He joked that he was the Raj in our relationship (Big Bang Theory fans will understand that reference)

~Took a long afternoon walk around the lake near our house since it was in the 70s. Toward the end of the walk, the clouds and wind rolled in and brought with it some really chilly temps!

~MG and I had another little date night where we grabbed dinner and saw Arrival which we both thought was really good!
{via}
~Did some early morning errands since I was craving pancakes and we didn't have any, so we got the grocery run out of the way, and MG was a saint and made me blueberry pancakes for breakfast!
~It was such a chilly and windy day that it was perfect for lounging the whole day in sweats, reading my Kindle, napping on the couch, and watching the Harry Potter marathon on Freeform. MG went to grab lunch and watch the 1pm games with a friend and I was more than content on the comfy couch, cozy and warm!

~Our power went out for about 2 minutes in the afternoon because the winds were so strong, but luckily it was short lived.

~Made my one pot lasagna soup for dinner since what's better on a cold and windy night than some yummy soup?

~Watched some more of The Crown (only one more episode to go!) and got ready for the short week ahead!

So, like I said, it was pretty low key and I was 100% ok with it!
Hoping yours was restful before the festivities of the week begin!

Faves This Week

Sorry for my absence yesterday. I had a doozy of a parent meeting on Wednesday afternoon and when I got home, a lot of time was spent on the phone with my supervisor, and even more time thinking about drinking an entire bottle of wine but restraining myself :)

But it's Friday which means the end of the week is here and a nice weekend to relax is ahead!
Despite the crummy meeting in the middle of the week (with a follow up coming the week after Thanksgiving--lucky me!), I still have some favorites from the week!

{1} Christmas Cards are Ordered
{via}
I realized that by Thanksgiving time last year I'd had my cards ordered addressed, and sent out already, and this year it totally snuck up on me. I used SimplytoImpress.com again and they have an awesome deal going on right now through the 21st, so if you haven't ordered yet, do it (plus, their prices overall are cheaper than tinyprints and minted, and their sale price is better than both right now too). I'll be sharing the card with you once I get my hands on it, but it feels good to get one more item checked off the box!

{2}Volunteering
MG and I signed up to help at a food bank in a couple of weeks. It's been a while since we volunteered, and we finally found one that's close to the house, so we're jazzed about getting the opportunity to give back to the community by packing up bags of food and delivering them to people who need it.
In addition to that, MG and I are going to participate in the Wreaths Across America again, but this year, instead of going to Arlington Cemetery, we'll be going to Quantico National Cemetery to lay a wreath on my dad's grave. It had meaning to me last year, but this year it holds that much more meaning and emotion.

{3} Joe Biden Memes
The memes of Joe Biden have made me giggle all week long. I love seeing new ones pop up every day, especially on days that I need a good laugh.

Here's the link to more....enjoy!

{4} Surprise Gifts
My friends continue to surprise me and Baby G with the package arrivals at our front door (making me think that I've been doing online shopping in my sleep haha). My bestie sent me a little gift earlier this week which was a super sweet surprise at the end of the day! This t-shirt is not only adorable (and I'm assuming true, although I can't speak to the full on "mom life" quite yet), but it's also SUPER soft and comfy, perfect for those days I'll be at home, snuggling my new little bundle of cuteness. Thank you, Genna, for being my best friend and being so stinking thoughtful! Love you girl!

{5} Funnies--because after this week, I need some chuckles!

WHW {#67}

Happy What's Hap-"Pinning" Wednesday, and the start of the week long countdown to Thanksgiving!
I'm still kind of in shock that it's just 8 days away!
This is the first time in probably 4 years that MG and I aren't hosting his parents and my parents (and last year we had my SIL and her family down). Instead, we're going with my mom up to PA to my SIL's house to celebrate. It'll be nice to not have the pressure of cooking and hosting, but I've enjoyed having people over, cooking, and decorating.

I thought it would be fun to do a little Thanksgiving Questionnaire since I always like getting to see people's ideas and preferences!

Favorite Part of Thanksgiving Meal: the sides are hands down my favorite part of Thanksgiving. I could take or leave the turkey, but give me ALLLLLLL the sides!

Favorite Side(s): sweet potatoes and stuffing are definitely in my top, and then the squash casserole that my mom and I make from my aunt's recipe is always a favorite as well
Have You Hosted Before? Yes, several times!

Favorite Decor for Thanksgiving: I love cute and unique place settings like these
{via}                                           {via}                                          {via}

Tree Up Before or After Thanksgiving (if you celebrate)? After! I'm a big proponent of celebrating each holiday as they come. When I see Christmas trees and decor up in stores in early October it makes me twitchy

Gravy or No Gravy? I used to be a no gravy person until I had my brother-in-law's home made gravy. So, I might be a convert

Smooth or Chunky Cranberry Sauce? Smooth 100%. Chunks are ew! Give me the stuff from the can any day!

Pumpkin Pie or Another Kind? Again, the texture of pumpkin pie always gets me, so I'd choose an apple pie with vanilla ice cream every day! (my mouth is watering thinking about all of this food!)
Biggest Thing You're Thankful For This Year: I'm sure it's no surprise that MG and I are incredibly thankful that we have a baby on the way. It's been a long time coming, and something that I've wished for for two years now, and wanted so badly to celebrate during Thanksgiving. We are so grateful and feel so blessed. This year it's a bit bittersweet, though, because I would have loved to be able to share this celebration this Thanksgiving with my dad. It makes me tear up a bit remembering him say last year "I don't know if I'll be at Thanksgiving next year" and now realize that he was right. As much as my heart is still broken from losing him, I take comfort in knowing that he'll be with us on Thanksgiving, even if it's not the way we had hoped, and I also know that he's had a hand in our baby blessing, and for that, I'm truly grateful.

What are you looking forward to most this Thanksgiving? Most thankful for?

Now it's your turn to link up with Jessi and I and share what's hap-"pinning" with you!

How to Haggle With Sirius XM

Don't worry, this isn't a sponsored post, this is just me sharing my experience with Sirius XM, and how to not get price gouged by this company.
{via}
Do you have Sirius XM in your car? I think a bunch of people tend to since it seems to come standard with new car purchases (and then they offer you free 3 or 6 months to get you roped in).

When it comes to renewal, do these things to reduce your rate. You should NOT be paying $200 a year for this service!!

1) Set a reminder in your phone a day or two before your account is going to expire.
These people automatically bill and hope that you don't notice. And it is NEVER with a promotional rate! This way, you avoid anything being pro-rated at the old rate even if you update your service.

2) Ask them what promotions they offer. If they tell you $99 for 6 months (at the most basic package), basically tell them where they can stick it, because that's ridiculous. At this point, tell them you want to cancel. They'll go through their rigmarole about not wanting to lose a customer. Blah blah blah. Let them process it and put you through to their "supervisor" who is the only one who can complete the cancellation (insert my big eye roll emoji here)

3) When the supervisor comes on the line, explain to him/her that you aren't going to pay X amount when you know someone who pays $99 for a year subscription and more than just the basic package (and you do--ME!) and if they can't offer you that price, then you'll cancel.
Magically the gates of Heaven open, angels sing, and those mysterious promotional rates re-appear and get added to your account! Amazing how that happens!
4) On the off chance that this doesnt happen (it's been about 5 years since they haven't offered me anything), be ok with cancelling. Likely, it will only last a few days, before you get emails and phone calls with those magical offers that no one could find before.

And that's it! You just saved yourself almost $100 on your XM subscription!

Weekending: The Packed One

Happy Monday, friends! I'm coming off of a whirlwind of a weekend, and am definitely not fully ready for the week ahead, and also...how is next week Thanksgiving???

Anyway, let's get to the highlights of the weekend:

~Well, this wasn't a highlight but MG and I had to take Cooper to the vet on Friday afternoon because he'd been throwing up for two days (consistently 11 hours after eating), and then after he would eat, he would shake and look like he was starting to have a seizure. We haven't seen those in almost two years since starting him on the meds, so we were concerned.
~Luckily the doc said he thought it was just a stomach thing so we put Coop on a bland diet and some Pepcid. Poor guy was quite exhausted after his exciting afternoon, and was a major cuddle bug sleeper
~Picked up food and had a chill kind of night with Designated Survivor, and a few more episodes of The Crown

~Ran our errands for the week on Saturday morning and discovered this cute pink and rose gold polka dot shirt at Target for $9
~Saturday afternoon we went to our friends' place to meet their new baby boy and get spoiled with snuggles and baby cuddles! MG was all about those baby cuddles--in fact, he was all in on holding little man before I could get my hands on him! (I love seeing him in this role!)
Also fun fact, our friend's twin sister just announced that she is pregnant and due in May, just like us! Lots of April/May babies lately!!

~On Saturday night we met up with our friend from Minnesota since he was in town with the Vikings for the game the next day--we waited for him to arrive at the hotel with some fans who apparently knew where they were staying, then grabbed dinner and had dinner next to Cordarelle Patterson and Charles Johnson
~Kev went to their nightly meetings then came over to see the house and hang out for a bit before heading back to the hotel--always love when we get to meet up with him.

~Sunday MG, myself, and two other guys (one friend I knew, and one work friend of MG's) went to the Skins/Vikings game since our friend scored us tickets. Originally we were supposed to go with our friend and his wife, but they couldn't get a babysitter for their twins, so he went and she stayed home (bummer!) It was a really nice day with gorgeous weather, even though the Vikings didn't win.
I may have enjoyed a chili cheese dog from Ben's Chili Bowl at the game...yum!
~Came back to the house (I got to DD, lucky me! haha) and had my crock pot pasta fagioli ready for us! Man was it good, and so nice not to have to worry about making dinner.
The rest of the night was pretty low key, gearing up for the week, with a look at the Supermoon!
Hoping your weekend was good and your week is off to a great start!

Uplifting Joys

Before the rest of my post, I want to give a huge shout out and take a moment to thank all of the veterans out there! My dad, uncle and grandfather were all vets and I know that without your service and sacrifice (and that of current military members), we would not be where we are today in our country without you. You are appreciated!
~.~.~
In the days after the election, when we're all feeling a little shell-shocked from this whole process, I wanted to focus on some positives, stress-reducing things.

I'm thankful for the roof over my head, and for the man I share my home with. For finding him at the right time in my life that I could truly appreciate him. I'm thankful for this baby who is growing inside of me, every day. I'm thankful for the love and support I get from my family, especially my mom. I'm glad that I have a wealth of friends who are kind and caring. I'm thankful for signs from my Dad that he's still here, watching over us.
This is just the start of a long list of things and people I'm thankful for. I'm choosing positivity and to focus on love.
I hope you will, too.

Our IVF Journey

I know so many people who have reached out in the time since I shared that we were going down the IVF road. Just hearing those three letters, or saying them out loud, was scary for me. The process seemed overwhelming, painful, and not fun.
But I'm here to tell you, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. My experience is my own, and everyone's will be different (different doctors, clinics, protocols, body responses, etc) but I wanted to share mine with you, to try and remove some of the fear and anxiety behind the IVF curtain.

My protocol was an antagonist protocol. Most of the people I know who have done IVF are on an agonist protocol which is different from the one I was on. According to my doctor, they choose each protocol based on each person's needs (age, circumstance, etc), but I was happy because mine involved a lot less needles/shots. And apparently the success rate is about the same (if you're a good candidate for the protocol). Let's say this, I know myself and two other people who went to my clinic, used the antagonist protocol, and we all had success with it.
So my antagonist protocol started with 19 days of birth control pills which I started in July (coincidentally while we were in Greece). I didn't have to do anything but take my birth control pills. You might be thinking "Birth control pills? But you're trying to get pregnant, right?" and I thought the same thing, but I believe the two IVF protocols both have BC pills at the start. And what I remember the rationale being is that it kind of 'quiets' your system, so when they start your meds, your body jumps into action.
Once I hit 19 days, I started my shots in the evenings. We had taken a class that told us how to mix the meds, and practice giving the shots--the next day my meds arrived and I will say, seeing this was kind of overwhelming, but after taking the shots class I was just ready to get started with everything!
My shots were Gonal-F and Menopur. I'd heard Menopur sucked the big one (really painful and stinging), so in anticipation of that, I got the Buzzy which I put above the injection site. The cold and the buzzing helped decrease any major pain I felt and it made things totally bearable.
After 3 nights of shots, I went back to the doc for a monitoring appointment. This is where they draw blood and do an ultrasound to look at your lining, and the number of follicles that you have and how big they are. In the beginning, you go to these appointments every other morning. In the afternoon you get a call from your nurse with any adjustments to the doses of your medications.
The hardest part of the shots for me was finding a place that hadn't been poked before (or bruised from a shot). It's best to rotate the shots from one side to the other, but you can still hit a previous injection site from time to time.

My night time routine of the two shots continued until my follicles reached a certain size, and then I started a morning shot of Cetrotide which basically keeps your body from ovulating so the follicles can keep growing. At this point, I was going in for my monitoring appointments (blood draws and ultrasounds) every morning. My every morning monitoring appointments were on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Finally on Sunday I got the word that I could do my trigger shot.
It had been up in the air for me which trigger shot I would do. A regular sub-cutaneous shot of Lupron (less painful) or an intra-muscular shot of HCG (more painful). Luckily for me, I was able to do the sub-cutaneous shot because my HCG levels were so high. My trigger shot was Lupron (which is interesting because in the agonist protocol, Lupron is used almost daily).
we filled up two of these containers
I had a minor freak out moment when I read the Lupron bottle incorrectly, thinking I didn't have enough medicine for my trigger, but thanks to another friend who was going through this, she calmed my fears and reassured me that I had the right amount.

The thing about the trigger shot is it's supposed to be done at a VERY specific time. Like, within a 5 minute window of the time they tell you, because your egg retrieval is scheduled at a specific time. My retrieval was scheduled 36 hours after my shot. So I took my shot at 9:45pm on the dot since my retrieval was scheduled for 9:45am on Tuesday morning.
celebrating and documenting our last night of shots!
Monday I still had to go in for a blood draw to make sure that the shot had taken. At this point my veins on my arms were pretty shot (no pun intended) having been poked and prodded every morning for 6 mornings. But, it was my first night that I didn't have to take any shots! Hallelujah!
Tuesday morning MG and I drove to the site where they do the egg retrieval surgery, and we brought along with us our semen sample (I say our, but let's be real, that was MG's). I wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything after midnight, so I was lucky that my surgery was scheduled for 9:45. I got changed into my super sexy blue surgery gear, we handed off MG's 'boys' to the staff, and then waited for them to call me into the surgery room. I walked in, laid down on the table and definitely had my heart racing a lot since I hadn't had a surgery in decades and was nervous. The nurses, doctors and anesthesiologist were super comforting and put me at ease. And once I got the anesthesia, I was out.
Apparently it was only about 10-15 minutes that I was in there as MG had gone downstairs to pick up the pain meds they'd prescribed and by the time he got upstairs, they came in to tell him I was done.

They told me they'd retrieved 12 eggs from the 18 follicles I'd had going in to the surgery (sometimes follicles don't have eggs).
I had some abdominal pressure afterwards and it was harder for me to use my ab muscles. I wasn't in dire pain, but I wasn't ready to do cartwheels. I ate some crackers and drank some water to make sure I didn't have any adverse reaction to the anesthesia, and I didn't. I got another little dose of the pain meds while I was hooked up to the IV since my pain was a little more intense than I wanted, and then I got up to walk around, and was released to go home and take it easy.

I was able to get up and go to the bathroom, and walk around the house, but I didn't do a lot other than sit/lay on the couch with a heating pad which was totally fine. I only took 1/2 of a Vicodin and later that day I believe I took two Tylenol, and that's all I needed for pain meds. Plus, I had a good nurse-husband taking care of me :)

I had some complications in the days after the retrieval in that my stomach got a bunch of bloat. Some is normal, but my stomach was totally distended and I had symptoms of mild OHSS (Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome). This happens due to a really high HCG level in your system. It's helped by eating salty foods, gatorade (or electrolyte drinks) and protein. I can't stress this enough. Hence the photo I posted a while back where I had 5 HUGE things of Gatorade. I drank 3 of them in one day trying to get the bloating down, but protein seemed to help me the most.

My embryo transfer was scheduled for 5 days after my retrieval, on Sunday morning, August 21st, and finally on Friday I felt almost back to normal, and by Saturday morning I felt good. If I'd had OHSS they would have postponed my transfer until my body was ready, but luckily it cooperated.

We had ONE embryo ready and waiting to go, and another one that was close, but not quite there. We had gone from 18 follicles, to 12 eggs retrieved. Of those 12, 9 were mature and 9 were fertilized after my egg retrieval. So to hear that we only had maybe 2 was a little disappointing, but we were still happy that there was one ready to go and that it was "top quality."
We implanted our one top quality emrbyo. The worst part of this procedure was having a full bladder beforehand (which helps them get access to your uterus). Otherwise, it was a breeze! We watched on the screen as the doctor released the embryo into the uterus. So quick, and just like that I was PUPO (pregnant until proven otherwise!)

I went home and rested on the couch for the rest of the day, and I ate pineapple (core included) in a smoothie as per the recommendation of Owen since the bromelain in it is supposed to help with a sticky uterus. Hey, I'd try anything at this point! I had the pineapple smoothie for 4 more days after my transfer as per the online sources I read (because everything online is true! haha)
(I mixed mine with blueberries)
The next day I took it pretty easy as well. I still got up and moved about the house but really just relaxed, watched tv, read my books, and snuggled with Cooper. I wanted to give that little embryo as much chance to get settled as possible!

Now, some protocols have people taking progesterone shots (intramusucular ones). This is a pretty common practice with IVF cycles, and one you've probably seen on tv like Meghhan King Edmonds talks about. My protocol used vaginal suppositories. They aren't the most pleasant things, but I took them over more shots. These started before my transfer and I took them twice a day until I reached 10 weeks! I also took an oral pill of Estrace which helps maintain the lining of your uterus. I took this pill twice a day until 8 weeks, then once a day until 10 weeks.

So because of the progesterone, my boobs were already sore before I even had my transfer. So any of the typical pregnancy signs and symptoms were already there, and not really something I could say "wow, I must be pregnant". But I will say, at one point I felt like my boobs had gotten even BIGGER than they had ever gotten on progesterone supplements before and I wondered...

I've already shared how we found out about being pregnant here, but I'll recap briefly:
At 8dpt(days past transfer), I took an at home pregnancy test which was positive. I took another one at 9dpt and it was also positive. And then at 12dpt I went into the doctor's office for my blood test which confirmed that we were pregnant.

I had to go back in two more times (every other day) to ensure that my hcg levels were rising how they were supposed to (doubling within 48 hours) and they were.

So, that's what my experience was with IVF--the "hands on" time for me was roughly 2 weeks. I always felt like it seemed longer when I'd heard people going through it. It wasn't nearly as awful as I thought it was going to be, and if I had to do it again, I know that I could, not that I'm in a huge rush to do that!
And I will say one of the positives of our whole journey, but especially the IVF journey is that MG and I got even closer. We were a team through this whole thing. He was my shot-giver every night. We had our routine: shots, high-fives and a kiss, and then I rewarded myself with ice cream. He supported me through all of this and he was seriously my rock. I'm not sure I could have given myself those shots (I know people who did/can and God bless you!), but as weird as it is, it brought us closer.
My advice if you have to go through this process: take it day by day. Try not to worry about the next things ahead because that's how you get overwhelmed. Focus on each task/hurdle you have for the day, and when it's complete, acknowledge another milestone you've passed.

I hope this helps take away some of the mystery and fear surrounding IVF. I think if we talk about it more and put it out in the open more, the stigma disappears and the fear is lifted a bit.
